Beavercreek School with Sustainable, Interactive Design Elements
The recently opened Beavercreek Trebein Elementary and Coy Middle School project is a state-of-the-art educational facility showcasing many sustainable and interactive site elements incorporated into the design. The 90,000 square foot Trebein Elementary School and 175,000 square foot Coy Middle School will house 1,850 students combined.
The Kleingers Group provided the site civil engineering, surveying, and landscape design services for the project. The site features joint-use amenities such as an outdoor amphitheater and outdoor learning space. Colorful playground elements such as a rainbow trail and the color-themed playground design welcome the kids as they take a break from class.
A goal of the project was to incorporate sustainable site design principles into the final construction plans for the school project. Kleingers created numerous Bioretention opportunities throughout the site. Bioswales were located throughout the parking lot areas and other areas of the site to remove contaminants and sedimentation from stormwater runoff.

Beckett Springs Hospital Opens
The Kleingers Group is proud to be a design partner for the regions newest hospital. Beckett Springs Hospital recently opened in West Chester, Ohio. The 37,000 square foot behavioral hospital offers 48 beds and will focus on mental health care and addiction treatment. The facility will provide inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient services to both adults and seniors. Kleingers provided the civil site design, surveying and landscape architecture design services on the project. The hospital is seeking to create a niche in the marketplace and the site design reflects that mission. Site design elements included a courtyard in the middle of the building. A curvilinear trail around the on-site pond was also created to provide vantage points from multiple areas of the facility.
An Elementary School Courtyard Comes to Life
The Kleingers Group Landscape Architecture Studio donated time to create a design and personally volunteered to help complete a courtyard for an urban elementary school in the City of Hamilton.
As it stood, the courtyard at Riverview Elementary was a space that was never fully utilized by the staff and students. The courtyard had no real organization, and in turn, saw little to no use. After meeting with the school staff and community organizers, a vision was set to transform the courtyard into a functioning and interactive outdoor learning space. The objective of the courtyard is to provide a space which aids in helping students meet required curriculum, but does so in a way which encourages the kids to love and learn about nature.
Six learning stations and an outdoor play area were designed with various elements to teach students about math, science, reading, art, health and physical education while also providing an outdoor gathering space where teachers can hold class. These areas include: A Tree Grove; Rain Garden; Outdoor Classroom; Reading Garden; Ecological Learning Area; Archeological Sand Dig; and Outdoor Play Area. Each space provides a unique learning area that can be used by the students throughout the year.
During construction, The Kleingers Group team laid out the design on site and helped organize volunteers in an effort to bring the design to life. The team laid out each learning area and directed volunteers where and how to plant plantings while also demonstrating how to construct the learning areas with the donated materials.
University Station Mixed-Use Project Underway
The long awaited University Station mixed-use project is set to begin construction. The Kleingers Group has participated in many aspects of the development site located at Montgomery Road and Cleneay Avenue adjacent to Xavier University’s Campus. The unique project, which is a collaboration of The Ackermann Group, Messer Construction, and Xavier University, is conceived and designed as a pedestrian-friendly urban space set upon 20-acres of land. Kleingers’ intrepid team of engineers, surveyors, and field crews have been working in a collaborative effort alongside the design team, City of Norwood, City of Cincinnati, various community leaders and Xavier University over the past two years. The design links previous work completed by The Kleingers Group to the new development; including site design at Hoff Quad, traffic impact studies, signal design, and widening projects along the Montgomery Road and Dana Avenue Corridors. The new off-campus development is intended to serve the University and its neighbors. The pedestrian oriented urban space creates a welcoming environment for the whole community to serve as more than a ‘standard’ mixed-use environment.
University Station brings a welcomed visual and economic improvement to the University’s neighboring communities. The $54 million Phase One development is located on 15 acres designed to include office space, retail, restaurants, a Xavier University bookstore, 900 parking spaces, and a 180 unit apartment complex.
Incorporating existing site features of the former Zumbiel Packaging and BASF plant into the design, while satisfying pedestrian connectivity & budget requirements, presented a challenge to the development team. Throughout the design project, Kleingers worked with the Client to navigate these issues to help make this exciting project a reality. Phase One of the project presents a tight schedule, breaking ground in mid-July with a scheduled completion of Fall 2014. The second phase of the development will include additional office space, retail, and a possible hotel.
